All Wheel Drive Cars

December 27th, 2009

The majority of cars on the road are rear wheel drive vehicles. This means that the car is powered by the rear axle spinning and the front tires are used for steering. This normally works fine. But, in some instances your front wheels turning will destabilize your tires for a moment, although traction is regained quickly.

These are the reasons some people prefer front wheel drive vehicles. If the front axle is powering the vehicle the rear wheels are being pulled. Since it is the front wheels that are turning and pulling the rear tires, steering traction won’t be lost and one will feel more in control during turns. Although, some car enthusiasts don’t like the feel of steering, in a front wheel drive vehicle.

The solutions to these dilemmas are all wheel drive cars. Both axles power the vehicle. These cars are usually heavier and have a little less fuel economy. But they provide the best traction and performance. The weight is evenly distributed and the tires maintain a firm grip on the road even during turns.

If one will be driving on snow or ice, driving all wheel drive cars can make all the difference in performance, handling, and safety. If you want maximum safety benefits add an antilock brake system, anti roll technology, traction control, and electronic stability control.

If a vehicle has all of these safety enhancements, power and throttle will be shifted to where it is needed for maximum performance. If one is really interested in safety and overcoming hazardous driving conditions the new all wheel drive cars are the best solution.

Most people are aware of the safety options of all wheel drive cars. Better performance and traction can give one more of a sense of control when driving. Especially when driving during hazardous winter driving conditions.

Drivers are more safety conscious than ever. Fortunately for them there are choices of all wheel drive cars in every price range. If one would like to keep their price range below 20,000$ then a Suzuki SX4, or a Subaru Impreza or Impreza Outback Sport are good choices.

Choices increase with the under 30,000$ range. There is the Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix. There is also a Subaru Legacy and Outback edition. Ford gets into the game with the Fusion and Taurus. If you want a Mercury you have the choice of the Milan or Sable. There is also an all wheel drive Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart and the Dodge Charger.

Move up another 10,000$ and there are upgraded versions of some of these previous models. Plus, the Audi A3, A4, TT, and the Volvo S40, S60, V50, and XC70 models will supply some added luxury. The BMW 328 is also in this range, as well as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. There is also a nice Cadillac CTS version and the Volkswagon CC.

If we add an additional 10,000$ to our price range we can get most of these cars in luxury models with even more features and safety enhancements. Of course there are all wheel drive cars in the super high end category as well, such as the Porsche 911 and the Bentley Continental.
